WaterMark and WELS explained

WaterMark is the certification that plumbing products such as taps, showers and toilets need before a licensed plumber can install them in Australia. WELS is the separate water efficiency star rating that must appear on taps, showers, toilets, urinals, dishwashers and washing machines sold in Australia.

WaterMark

WaterMark shows a product has been tested and certified under the Plumbing Code of Australia. Uncertified tapware bought online overseas may not be legal to install, and an installer can refuse it.

WELS stars

More stars means less water. A 3-star shower uses more than 7.5 but no more than 9 litres a minute. A typical 4-star toilet has a 4.5 / 3 litre dual flush.

How to check

Ask for the WaterMark licence number and look for the WELS label. Both can be checked on the government registers.

Common questions

Do all taps need WaterMark?

Taps and other products connected to the drinking water supply and installed by a plumber must be WaterMark certified.

Does a higher WELS rating mean weaker water pressure?

Not necessarily. Good low-flow showers use aerated or shaped sprays to feel stronger.
