Shower screen glass thickness

Frameless shower screens use 10 mm toughened safety glass; semi-frameless and framed screens use 6 mm. Some frameless doors use 8 mm. All shower screen glass in Australia must be safety glass meeting AS/NZS 2208 Grade A.

Why it matters

Frameless glass has to support itself on a few hinges or brackets, so it needs the stiffness of 10 mm. Framed glass is supported on its edges, so 6 mm is enough.

Toughened glass cannot be cut

Once glass is toughened it cannot be cut or drilled. Every hole and notch is made before toughening, which is why screens are measured carefully before ordering.

Weight

10 mm glass weighs about 25 kg per square metre. A 900 x 2000 mm fixed panel weighs about 45 kg.

Common questions

Is 8 mm glass good enough for frameless?

For smaller doors, yes. 10 mm is the common choice for fixed panels and walk-in screens.

Can a shower screen be cut down to fit?

No. Toughened glass shatters if cut. It must be made to size.
